Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

If yesterday wasn't enough, here we are again, at the wee hours of the morning, on the streets of New York. My children can officially say that they have slept on the streets. We arrived on this corner at 6 am to get a front row viewing of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. The parade should be in this area around 9:30am. Alot of sitting and waiting! It is cold and the concrete is even colder.Tim and I waiting for the parade...starting to feel like sardines.Tim and Ryan ran back to the hotel to get blankets....Now they are all bundled!Playing a few hands of "21" passed the time.....All 9 nine of us waiting for the parade to begin. The first balloon.....The Sesame Street float....Cee-lo Green.....Snoopy coming down the road...Neil Diamond....After a last minute trip to Chinatown, we are on a plane headed home.... What a wonderful week! We have so many things to be thankful for...friends, family, and time to share memories together.

Celebrating Celena's 40th birthday...Dawn to Dusk

Birthday celebration began at 5 am as we all got ready to go to the Today Show. We were there at 6 am and shocked to see the thousands of people who had apparantly been there for a few days. After circling the block, we settled on a location behind the stage, but still where we could view the corner office of the Today Show. Much to Celena's surprise and delight, Usher joined Beeber on stage...making her birthday off to a great start! We could only see Justin Beeber and Usher on this jumbo screen, because they were under a tent due to the rain.The Museum of Natural History...remember this dinosaur from "Night at the Museum?"The kids loved all the exhibits of the animals and fossils....We decided to try the canoe rentals one more time at Central Park.....closed due to the rainy weather. UGH! Oh well, it is just not meant to be.The police force getting their orders for the parade tomorrow.....This is just a glimpse of what we will see - police everywhere!Balloons are tied on this fence around an entire block in preparation for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.....Olive Garden for dinner....Celena's favorite restaurant.Off to ice skating in Bryant Park. Ben had so much patience teaching the kids the basics and some tricks..... Tim still has it.......Emily's hanging right there with him:)Celena taking a tumble....at least she is able to laugh about it!After ice skating we went to Carnegie Deli for some of their famous cakes and cheesecakes....They were to die for. On the way back, we stumpled upon the Late Show. We had no idea it was that close to our hotel.Subway surfers...... A day packed full of fun activities. Happy Birthday to the best friend anyone could ask for. Thanks for letting my family share this day with you!

Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular

Tuesday was our day of rest. We slept in and then went to see the Rockettes perform in the "Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectular." It was amazing!After the show, the girls were able to get their photograph taken with Santa Clause. The show was spectacular indeed! The remainder of the day was rainy, so we took it easy in the area around our hotel.

A Day in Lower Manhattan

Monday morning we all went to see the 911 Memorial pools that have been erected in place of the twin towers. It was sombering standing there, imagining the morning of September 11, 2001. So many names written on the plaques.....The pools are supposed to symbolize the constant tears in remembrance of those who died on that day.The new Freedom tower that is being built next to the pools.We then walked to the New York Financial District. That was eye-opening as well. A lot of police due to protestors the week before. The baracades built within the streets as to not to allow car traffic. The Wall Street Bull...usually you are able to be next to it, but again it is blocked off due to protestors.This globe stood between the twin towers when they fell. It is a symbol of world peace. The city salvaged it and will place it next to the Freedom tower when it is complete. There are no plans for fixing it....another reminder of September 11th.We are waiting on the ferry to Liberty Island and Ellis Island here at Battery Park.A depiction of immigrants coming to the New World....Ferry to Liberty Island....See her in the background?Lower Manhattan left behind....We spent an hour or so on Liberty Island...of course we had to take lots of pictures in front of Lady Liberty, but we also enjoyed a picnic, and the kids played in the piles of leaves. If that was not enough....we walked the Brooklyn Bridge to Ben's apartment. We ate at the most awesome pizza place and then Ben took us on a tour of where he works and lives. This is the view from the top of Ben's building.....I would say probably one of the best views of New York City!The ten of us toured the streets of New York like crazy people for 7 days. Great people....great times....wonderful memories!

Day 3 in The Big Apple

On Sunday, November 20th, we went to Rockefeller Plaza, St.Patrick's Cathedral, and then to Central Park for the rest of the day. The city was already being decorated for the holidays. Beautiful angels with golden horns among the greenery..... St.Patrick's Cathedral.....Nanny went to church for a Sunday morning mass- what an incredible building with beautiful architecture!The doors to the church were amazing in themselves.....Inside looked like a church built for kings and queens....Central Park...what to do? Bike rides, horse and carriage rides? The kids climbed rocks and played in trees. We walked through half of the park, which is HUGE! Playing on the great lawn....We walked around this lake in hopes to rent canoes....by the time we got there, they had closed for the day.Some of the city skyline from inside Central Park......Belvedere Castle is located in the middle of Central Park.....Back where we began....these are the rocks that the kids loved climbing on. Celena and I are enjoying the gorgeous weather and relaxing as the kids play. A day filled with new sights and a lot of walking. I had no idea that Central Park was so large. It's a little piece of country in the middle of all the concrete. Tim is also pretty sure that he saw Steve Martin walking in the Park.

Day 2...In New York City

Saturday, November 19th, we were ready to see more of this city. In the morning, we went to Rockefeller Center and then met Ben in the afternoon for a tour of Little Italy, SoHo, ChinaTown, and more of Times Square.The things the kids enjoy....."Top of the Rock"....so much to see from up here!The Julius family with Central Park in the background.....We were on top of the Empire State Building last night....On the streets of New York, there are "characters" everywhere to have your picture taken with. We couldn't pass up Mickey Mouse.In Little Italy, we are waiting to eat at a quaint Pizza shop....Best ice cream in Chinatown.....Hollister....SoHo.....look at all those jeans....Back in Times Square for the night......so much to see and do!The Hersey store was a big hit....Off to M&M world....Yum!One...two...three...JUMP!A must do......glass elevators in the Marriott Times Square. We are leaving the hotel after touring their elevator system....Celena....a dirty water hot dog.....pigs flew tonight:)A pretzel as big as they are..... What a day! So much to see and do. Ben has been more than a lifesaver. Chinatown was interesting.....people whispering to you "watches, purses". A whole different lifestyle.

Our first day in The Big Apple

When finally arriving at our hotel, we met up with Ben and he showed us around the city near our hotel. We toured Times Square and stopped to get a bit to eat at TGIFriday's. The busy life...Nolan, Haley, Abi, and Emily in front of the huge ferris wheel inside Toys R Us...So many things to see and do....YIKES - a dinosaur in New York!Taking a break in front of Bryant Park....we will ice skate there later in the week.Grand Central Station terminal....I now know where the expression comes from - people, people everywhere!Heading to the top of the Empire State Building....Met King Kong along the way....View of the Chrysler Building from the top of the Empire State Building....What a view.....Ben and Emily, making difficult candy decisions, in the gift store..... The first night in New York we were able to tour a few shops in Times Square and go to the top of the Empire State Building. We had the best tour guide ever!

New York Here We Come

Friday, November 18, 2011, we headed out early for the airport. We stopped at Chick-Fil-A for a bite to eat and the kids discovered the play area.Emily and Haley on the shuttle bus at the airport.....
Cindy, Abi, and Tim ready for the Big Apple....We were flying JetBlue....each passenger has their own TV monitor. The kids thought this was pretty cool. Ryan and Nolan ready for the trip....A week of fun planned with my best friend!The first part of our adventure....riding the Subway from JFK into Manhattan. We stood out like a sore thumb!We are ready for our week of fun and adventure....off to see and explore the sights of New York City!

Emily's Black Stalliion Field Trip

On November 17, 2011, Emily's 4th grade class went to the Jacksonville Equestrian Center to watch a re-enactment of the book, "The Black Stallion." Courtlin, Brianna, and Emily found their seats and are waiting for the performance..... The performers and horses were amazing...lots of tricks for the kids to enjoy.What an entertaining morning for us all....full of stories, excitement, and tricks!

Twin Day at KHHS

During Homecoming week at the high school, one of the dress up days was "Twin Day." Delaney and Jordan as twins.....Twin Sistas.....Abi and Anna....two peas in a pod.
What a fun bunch of girls to have in my room every morning! There is constant laughter and goofy-ness.

Halloween Party 2011

On October 29, 2011 we had some of the girls friends over for a Halloween party. We had a costume contest, Fear Factor bug eating table, and many Minute-to-Win-it games.

Tim set up the wax station and the kids got to make wax hands or fingers....."Freddie Kruger," Nolan, taking his turn making a wax fist....MaKenna, Delaney, Abi, and Riley....Celena attempting stilts.....Is Fear a Factor for you - there were different flavored larvettes and chocolate covered crickets.....The participants in the costume contest.....

Abi, Riley, MaKenna, Delaney, Courtlin, Lauren, Emily, Haley, Nolan, and Dylan.Silly photo time.....Bobbing for apples is always a big hit. Some were able to get the apple by its stem, others dunked their entire heads in the bucket.If there was an award for persistence, Delaney would have gotten it. She did not stop until she got an apple.Jordan does everything "just right." I am not surprised that she did not get wet.Minute to Win It card "house building" game.....Emily and Courtlin trying to make their cards stand.....Mrs. Julius was a pro....She said that she had plenty of practice growing up.Water pong...You have one minute to get as many ping pong balls, in the cups of water, as possible.Dice stacking game....Holding a popsicle stick in your mouth, balance 5 dice, one on top of the other, for at least 3 seconds.Way to go Mrs. Gentry - and with plenty of time to spare.Emily dressed as the Twister game and Abi as Strawberry Shortcake.The Halloween party was a huge success. Those kids who didn't play the games had a great time playing Cornhole, Volleyball, and Manhunt. When everyone had left, we enjoyed a quiet evening by the fire. Halloween was on the following Monday and our family went trick-or-treating with the Julius family. We took Zoey along for the adventure.

Our Newest Addition....Zoey

On Saturday, October 22, life as we knew it changed. We rescued Zoey from the local animal shelter. She is an 8 week old yellow lab. She fit right in to our family..... We had no supplies for a puppy, so Tim and Emily headed to Walmart....Now she has a comfy bed, "hedgie," and a cute pink collar.Love at first sight.....Emily has wanted a puppy ever since she was old enough to talk. Christmas came a few months early for her.My how she has grown in just one week.....Abi gave Zoey her Bratz chair - a perfect fit....Abi is being tucked into bed by Zoey and Georgette.... I don't think Georgette knew she was there :)This is the life.....Zoey has been such a fun addition to our family. The girls are realizing how much work a puppy can be. I'm sure there will be many fun and new experiences ahead.

Volleyball Days

Abi made the Junior High Volleyball team this year and had a blast learning the game and being with her friends. Their first game was against Bradford. They won 2 out of the 3 games. Our girls played hard and worked together - they are improving every game.Abi, watching and waiting.....It was amazing to watch the improvement of these girls as they went through the season. They began working as a team and playing better each and every game. Way to go Lady Indians!

Labor Day Fun

On Sunday, September 4, 2011, we had a few friends over to relax and enjoy each other's company. Here Emily is with her two very best friends, Remi and Haley, along with Riley.It was a very hot afternoon. The Wilkes family trying to keep cool in the pool. Precious...Stephanie and HarperCarter Draney enjoying his entertainment....Tim with Jeannie, Ric, and Alyssa....And they are off. Watch out world these 3 could mean trouble....Anna and Ericka taking a spin around the yard....Abi and Riley just being goofy.....The men and boys played football, "bags", and manhunt with the kids.....Remi taking Riley for the ride of his life.....Anna, Abi, and Riley keeping cool....We have realized that we don't take time off often enough. It was so much fun watching the kids play and relaxing with friends was well needed.

Backyard Target Practice

On Saturday morning, August 27, 2011, Tim got out his guns and set up a target range in the backyard. There were cans, water bottles, and boxes of all shapes and sizes for the girls to practice their shots. They were quite good at it too.Concentration....Good shot Abi!Tim helping Emily line up her sights... Emily learning how to load and take the safety off....Emily getting a little more confident....I don't think either one of the girls would ever hunt a live animal, but they had a lot of fun learning about guns and their safety.

1st day of School 2011

August 16, 2011 was the first day of school. Abi is a 7th grader and goes to school with me now. Emily is in the 4th grade. Her teacher is Mr. Seneca. She is going to have an amazing year.Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday that they were starting kindergarten.

Tubing on Lake Santa Fe

The weekend before school began, we took Emily, Haley, and Nolan tubing on Lake Santa Fe. Emily and Haley were up first.....Holding on for dear life....It wasn't very hard to throw them off.....
Ryan and Nolan were a different story....But in the end, Tim got them off...Captain of the boat....Heading to the sandbar on Little Lake Santa Fe, Nolan, Emily, and Haley being silly.....Ryan and Haley were up last....All smiles...They came close to tipping over, but Tim never got them off.....
A great way to spend our last day of summer - on the water with our best friends.

Look what we found: Baby Squirrells

When we were at Swan Lake, Ben and Tommy found 3 baby squirrells in a nest of moss on the ground. There had been a bad storm the day before that probably knocked the nest out of the tall pine tree. We got kittens milk and a syringe and feed them every few hours. We gave them to some of our friends who had experience with baby squirrells. Even though they only made it for a few days, we got it our best try.

Abi with Braces

The Loose Family Reunion July 2011

On July 24, 2011, the Loose family got together to visit and reminise about old times. Some of "the guys".... I hear they were trouble back in the day! While the adults were inside, the kids were outside on the playground.... Let the feast begin....Siblings...Kim, Ted, Andy, and Tim, looking at old photos and advertisements.....Megan, the hairdresser - fixing up Abi...Abi's marshmellow man....Kristi being caught behind the camera...."Angry eyes"......Sara was wearing down by the end of the reunion....Ted, Mary, Sara, and Kristi.....Andy, Mindy, Megan, and Brian....Kim, Larry, and Jeremy (we missed you Chase)...This is where it all began....Grammy and Pa Loose surrounded by the grandchildren (Chase was the only one not able to make it).....The end result.....The Loose women.....Molly and Dick's creations....Sally and her family.....Danny's family....After the rain, the girls checked out the fire truck...Tim's friend, Mark Murray, took a break from work to stop by and visit with the family.Part of the "clean-up" crew..... And what a fine job they did!It is always great getting the entire Loose family together. The pictures, stories, and videos are priceless.

Family time in Ohio July 2011

On July 22, 2011, we left for Ohio to spend the weekend with family and friends. It was a wonderful, relaxing time. Being with family always seems to put smiles on our faces. The cousins being silly in Grammy and Pa Loose's living room. Saturday...the guys went to Mid Ohio to a motorcycle fest while the women and kids hung out at the pool.Later that afternoon, we went to Ted and Mary's house for fun times and dinner.After the family reunion on Sunday, we all went to Andy and Mindy's and celebrated July and August birthdays....When we go to Ohio, we always try to visit Tim's childhood friend, Mark Murray, and his family. We met them at their pool and had a day of fun.Abi taking the plunge from the high board.....Tim's "free fall".....Emily's turn.....As the day went on, Abi got bravier and started doing some tricks.....The morning we were leaving, Tim and Pa Loose took the girls to Pa Loose's shop. You just never know what "toys" you will find.Pa Loose's cousin, Danny, was at the shop and took the girls for a "ride of their lives" in his Corvette.We always have such a great time and it is hard to come home and leave our cousins and grandparents.

Last Day on Maui

"All good things must come to an end" (I guess). We asked the girls what they wanted to do on our last day on Maui. It was not a difficult choice for either of them....they wanted to visit the Olivine Pools and the Blowhole one more time. When we got to the Pools, we were amazed at the ocean's fury. The pools were not calm and relaxing, like they were about 1 week ago. They were being washed out to sea by huge waves crashing into the shore. It was too dangerous to venture close to the pools, so we headed to the Blowhole. What a sight to see on this day!! We thought it was neat before, but with the huge waves, the blowhole was spectacular. I love this picture (the blowhole "exploding" as a monster wave crashes onto the rocks)!This area was to the right of the blowhole....today there were tidal pools in the rocks. You can see another huge wave as it crashes over the rocks, whereas a week ago, the waves were well below the rocky coastline of the island. It was fascinating, and scary, at times to watch the ocean's fury beat against the island's ragged coastline. We have never experienced waves this large and powerful before. We are not sure of the cause, but the skies were sunny and the temperature was still an awesome 80 degrees.

Surfing is harder than it looks

On July 6, 2011 we rented a surfboard for the day. We were told that the surf conditions were not ideal, but they were not going to get any better before we had to leave the island. Tim helped the girls in shallow water before sending them out to the waves. Emily stayed relatively close to shore....She was scared about falling onto the coral reef, which was about 3 feet under the surf. She did catch a wave and rode the board, on her knees, up to the shore.Abi eventually caught a wave, was able to stand up, and rode it in to shore (of course, I didn't have the camera ready) ..... After a day of getting beat up by the waves, the girls were still in good spirits about surfing. They realized that it is much more difficult than it appears. They both said that they would like to try it at our beaches, without the fear of falling into sharp rocks.

Old Lahania Luau

What a FUN night full of entertainment and adventure! We went to the Old Lahania Luau. We heard many great comments about this particular luau. It is supposed to be the most authentic presentation of how the Hawaiian islands and people came to be. We were greeted at the door with orchid leis and awesome service. Abi and Emily were able to do some Hawaiian crafts prior to the all-you-can-eat buffet and show. The girls got to pick from the same "drink" menu as the adults, the only thing missing was the alcohol....Here the girls were shown how to take 5 flowers and arrange them so that they look like one large flower.....When we entered the luau, Tim spotted a pile of dirt surrounded by a small rock wall. He informed me that "our dinner" was buried under that dirt. Sure enough, prior to dinner, they uncovered the pork that was being slow cooked under the banana leaves. It was like pulled pork and it was delicious.Beautiful scenery as the sun starts to set, tiki torches get lit, and the boats begin to anchor just off the coast.Abi and Emily with our waitress......and a couple of the "performers." What an awesome night...Gorgeous night with lots of fun festivities. A must do in Hawaii!

Lahania, Maui

On July 5, 2011, we took the submarine, Atlantis, down to 100 feet to coral reefs and a sunken ship. We left from Lahania, taking a ferry out to the sub. Once on the submarine, we explored the depths of the ocean for about 45 minutes. On the ferry, heading out to the submarine....Each person had their own seat and window....The captain, guiding our sub to its destinations.....The pictures from the inside didn't do the scenery justice. Here was a school of multi-colored fish staying safe by way of numbers.....Someone attached a "Spongebob" to the ship before they sunk it to the bottom of the ocean....We stayed to watch the submarine descend with the next group of tourists onboard.....Heading back into Lahania, a neat "old" boat anchored...One entire block in Lahania is taken up by this banyan tree. The girls had a great time playing and climbing on its many branches.....While shopping in Lahania, we came across a man making hats. They were freshly made (as you can see they are still green) and each girl paid $7 for their hat. This was the best deal we found in all of Hawaii. We then went to the Whaler's village and visited the Whaler's museum and many quaint shops. Lahaina is such a neat historical town with great shopping, restaurants, and entertainment. We visited this town many times while staying in Kaanapali.

The Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is all about the trip along the way, not so much the city of Hana. It takes about 5 hours to reach Hana if you stop and sight see along the way. The road has many hairpin turns, but beautiful sights to see, like waterfalls, black sand and red sand beaches, and pools of crystal clear water to swim in.Everything is so lush and green on this side of the island....To get to this waterfall we had to ignore "No Trespassing" signs, but it was well worth it. We were able to swim in this pool and actually sit under the waterfall.Tim made it to the waterfall.....The water is freezing and crystal clear....The girls made it after fighting the strong current from the falls....Most beautiful place on earth......Here we visited a black sand beach with caves and paths to explore....The colors here are just indescribable....A "sea arch" off in the distance....More black sand beaches below.....Next stop...a red sand beach in Hana....Always exploring tidal pools....This one had sea urchins, sea cucumbers, crabs, fish, and colorful coral.We've never seen a sea urchin quite like this....Tim holding a sea cucumber.....As Tim and Abi explore, Emily finds a coconut and works very hard trying to open it.....Emily and the "shell tree".....I just love the colors as they change constantly.....More banyan trees....Our last stop....the Seven Sacred Pools in HanaThis was a very long day (starting out at 7am and returning home at 9:30pm), but well worth all the beautiful sights and adventures. We ventured around the entire East side of the island, ignoring the warnings about the dangerous one-lane gravel roads on the Southeast side of the island.

Haleakala Mountain in Maui

On July 2, 2011 we decided to make the trip to Haleakala National Park. Normally this is a hot spot for sunrise viewing, but we opted for sunset. We started our journey in shorts and t-shirts and ended in jeans and sweatshirts. Who would have thought Hawaii has a place that is about 50 degrees in the summer.We stopped at a crater on the way up the mountain....The wind is blowing and it is cold! We are already above the clouds...Reaching the top of the mountain at 10,000 feet.....The observatory on Haleakala....The barren land at this elevation.....This is a plant called a "silversword." They grow all over in this type of dry climate. They are soft to touch, but look like a sea urchin.Sunset from above the clouds....Our rental - Jeep Compass....I can't imagine getting up at 2 am to drive to this mountain for sunrise. It must be spectacular to see, but we thought it was a beautiful view at sunset.

Olivine Pools on North Maui

Tim was dreaming when he took this picture, wishing he was on that boat in Honolua Bay. We did some snorkeling at this sight during the morning hours.After snorkeling at Honolua Bay, we ventured on one of the most dangerous roads on the North side of Maui to get the "Planet's Best Banana Bread". Most of the time, the road was wide enough for only one car. You never knew what or who was around the next turn.We made it to the small village of Old Kahakuloa to buy some banana bread. We decided to buy 2 loaves, because we knew that we would not venture this road again.Our next stop was the Olivine Pools. This was the girls favorite spot on all of Maui.Hiking down and around, there was "Dinoasaur" rock....and upside down "hippo" rock.....You can see the pools, just above Emily's head, that is where we are going....Beginning our descent....The pools were the same temperature as the ocean - very cool and refreshing.Hiking around the pools, there were neat rock formations....Emily taking the plunge.....This was another smaller pool (just to the left of the where the girls are standing).Abi giving the "Hang Loose" sign..... Emily's turn.....As the girls jumped and played in the pools, Tim went off exploring. This is the view of the rough and ragged coastline that extends for many miles.Abi has the pool all to herself....Emily diving in....For most of the time, we had these pools all to ourselves. We decided to visit these pools again on our last day in Maui, but the ocean was very violent, washing and flushing these pools out into the sea....so we went back to the blowhole instead.

Nakalele Blowhole on North Maui

We had no idea that wherever we would go would be a dangerous adventure. If the roads were not scary enough, hiking down the side of a cliff, to get to the shore's edge, would do it. We had read about a blowhole on the north side of Maui, so we decided to make the 30 minute drive to check it out.It seems like we are on top of the world....We came across this "heart" shape that was cut out of the rock...As the waves approached, water would shoot in the air from the blowhole.... The Pacific Ocean as far as one's eyes can see.....It was peaceful watching and listening to the ocean waves crash into the coast.... Abi - waiting and watching....Cindy - just before she gets soaked..... This was one of our favorite locations. We will visit it again on our last day where the ocean is much more violent.

Ka'anapali Beach

Ahhhh....Maui - enough said! As soon as we walked off the plane, it was evident that Maui was going to be an entirely different experience. We are so glad to we spent 9 days on this quiet, relaxing island. In front of our hotel, on Ka'anapali Beach, Tim and the girls decided to check out the snorkeling. They saw 2 eels and lots of colorful fish and coral. My view as I relaxed on the beach....2 islands just off the coast with gorgeous water and light brown beach.Tim and the girls make their chairs.....Emily trying out her boogie board.....Love the smiles and laughter.....Abi's turn....love her face as she is holding her breath!The waves would break pretty close to the shore, allowing them to ride their boogie boards right up onto the beach.

Shopping in Waikiki

The last evening on Oahu, we went out for a night on the town in Waikiki. This strip has many high dollar shops like Coach, Louis Vuitton, Apple, and Ferrari. It was alot of fun to "window" shop and see the street performers.Loved the torches everywhere..... Although we only bought a few souvenirs at Hard Rock Cafe and another little boutique, it was fun to visit these shops.

Ko'Olina Coves

On our last day on Oahu, we decided to visit the coves that a local gentleman had told us about. There were pristine beaches that were ideal for swimming and snorkeling. This is where Disney is building their resort. Beyond the coves is the natural shoreline where there are tidal pools of sealife. We had fun exploring this part of the coves as well.This is the Disney Resort, which opens in August 2011.What I loved most about this location was that part of the beach was grass and the other part was sand. It was comfortable and not so messy.Sunset from the coves.... This was a "quieter" side of Oahu, very peaceful and relaxing...yet beautiful!

Our Big Hawaii Island Tour

On June 27, 2011, we left out of our hotel at 6:30am to catch a flight to the Big Island, Hawaii. We then spent the day on a tour, visiting all of the "hot" spots of this island. Our first stop was Moku Ola (Coconut Island) where there is a black sand beach. The girls collecting rocks and sand...... This was our only day with questionable weather. It rained off and on all day, but the sights were still beautiful.Abi touring the park area....Our next stop was Liliuokalani Gardens. The girls are at the base of the banyan tree. Everything is so lush and green due to the large amounts of rainfall on this side of the island. After eating lunch, the girls discovered these "berries" growing from a tree. A picture in front of Kamehameaha, The Great. He ruled this island long ago.We then stopped at Rainbow Falls, near Hilo Town. I still cannot get over the size of these trees....We spent most of the afternoon in the Volcano National State Park. Here were are overlooking the Kilauea Iki crater formed by an explosive volcano in 1959. You can actually hike down to the bottom of the crater, but it is a 4 hour walk.Heading into the Thurston Lava Tube. It's hard to imagine lava flowing so thick that this tube was formed. What a sight that must have been.Inside the lava tube. The tube itself is probably 15-20 feet tall and about the same width.Rocks, benches, cracks, and crevasses were all a result as the lava began to cool.If you look closely, you can see the huge "rock" wedged in the tree. This was from the Kilauea volcano and as the volcano erupted, rocks got lodged in trees and are still there.Walking through an eruption site, the ground is all ash and rock.....Nature has a way of replenishing itself, even if it is surrounded by rocks.On our drive down "Chain of Craters Road," we stopped at different age lava flows and went exploring. The first lava flow was from 1969. It was sharp, thin, and brittle.Sitting in front of a "lava tree" formed by the 1974 flow....Apparently the lava flow in 1974 was different in temperature than the flow of 1969, because it was not as brittle and thin. As we rode through the National Park, there were Steam vents from Kilauea.Notice the difference in color. The darker lava is from the 1972 eruption (more brittle than the lava underneath it).Emily, Abi, and Cindy sitting on lava that flowed over an existing road back in 1972. A new road has been built to replace the part that is no longer driveable from the lava.Neat lava patterns....The lava extends as far as the eye can see...until it hits the ocean miles off in the distance.Our last stop was the observatory at Mauna Loa. As it got darker outside, the glow from the lava was more and more visible. Apparently, the earthquake in Japan (a few months ago) dropped lava levels on Hawaii by 150 feet. So there was no flowing lava, only a crater with lava below. It's still hard to believe that we are able to see a red glow from molten lava that is from the earth's core.
What a fascinating day full of adventure and beautiful scenery. We only spent this one day on the Big Island, but it was well worth it.

A Day of Remembrance at Pearl Harbor

Everyday started the same...sunscreen! We got an early start to see and tour Pearl Harbor.USS Missouri....A battleship from WWII - however, it was not at Pearl Harbor the day of the attack.Abi and Emily in front of an anchor with the USS Arizona Memorial off in the distance....I'm not sure why men and kids are fascinated with lots of guns..... The world was painted on the concrete when you first walk in the gates at Pearl Harbor. A long distance from home.....4,670 miles apparently......You take a boat to the USS Arizona Memorial.....Many ships were lost on December 7, 1941 - here the USS Nevada....This is what is left of an exposed gun turret on the USS Arizona... You can see the oil that still seeps from the ship continuously.Here is a wall of names of all the soldiers that died on the USS Arizona. It makes you proud to be an American.This plaque is on the deck of the USS Missouri and shows the location of surrender of Japan on September 8, 1945.Visiting a hangar at the Pacific Aviation Museum....We also went to Hangar 79, which is still in "battle condition" with bullet holes visible in the glass windows.Cindy and Tim getting ready to tour the submarine...USS Bowfin.The girls were able to play with controls inside the Bowfin Museum....The day was filled with history and education. After all the times Tim has watched World War II documentaries with footage of Pearl Harbor, it was fascinating to see where it all took place.

Hawaii Here We Come

After the long flight to Honolulu, we were ready to get our feet in the sand and water. We walked, the short distance, from our hotel to Waikiki Beach. Ahhh....the views are gorgeous! Diamondhead Crater off in the background....Abi and Emily jump right in the cool water - look at all the surfers off in the distance. The waves break on the reef just off the coast.On Sunday June 26, 2011, we drove to the North Shore. The first beach we stopped at was in the town of Hale'iwa. The snorkeling and sea turtles were amazing.Abi is already in the water and ready to go.....She sees a sea turtle....how were we to know that there were many more to follow....The TV show, Lost, was filmed on the "tip" of the mountain that you see in the distance.Abi named this sea turtle, Barnacle, because he had 2 barnacles on his back. The turtles would sit up on the rocks and eat algae as the waves just pounded at them. It was amazing how close you can get to the turtles and they do not act scared or threatened. The girls even touched Barnacle before we knew that there could be a fine attached to touching a sea turtle. From then on, we looked, but didn't touch!Emily getting ready to explore a whole new world.....The country side was just so different than anything we have ever seen. The colors and scenery were breathtaking.....We drove farther up the North Shore to a beach called Waimea Beach. Great swimming, even better snorkeling, and fun watching all the crazy people jump from these "rocks."Our girls found a "cave" that they could play in and relax.....Most of the shorelines are rocky, which makes for great entertainment and adventure. After only 2 days on Oahu, we have already seen amazing sights. The weather is gorgeous, 80 degrees with no humidity, and the water is refreshingly cool.

Evergreen Water and Wings Museum

There is a new waterpark that just recently opened in McMinnville, Oregon. It is a part of the museum there, but it is in a building all to itself. There is a 747 on top of the building and the water slides go out the sides of the aircraft. What a really cool and fun experience!The green slide was the most popular because it was like a toilet bowl flume. Filming of "Twilight" Location

Abi and I were talking about how the scenery in Oregon looks alot like that in the Twilight movies. Kim told us that scenes from the first movie were filmed just minutes from their house at a local restaurant. We just had to go and see for ourselves.....Each "scene" that was used in the movie was labeled with a poster.We would read each poster trying to remember the scene in the movie. We will have to watch it again when we get home.Abi thought it was very cool that she was able to be in the same locations as Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart.

Oregon and all its beauty

Our road trip began on the scenic route to Multnomah Falls and ended 8 hours later at Mount Hood. We stopped at the visitor's center and outlook for the Columbia Gorge. Absolutely breathtaking sights....As we began our drive around Mount Hood, we stopped at many waterfalls along the way. All of the waterfalls are a result of the snow melting on Mount Hood. The hiking was well worth the sights along the way....Emily, Abi, Cindy, and Kim overlooking the stream below...The biggest and most impressive "double" falls is Multnomah Falls. Looking out over the "lower" falls - such a beautiful sight!Driving around Mount Hood, we stopped to stretch our legs at a park with a stream.....Look at the size of the logs it took to build this bridge.... It's hard to believe that there is still snow on Mount Hood even in June. Playtime!The snowball fights begin.....A day of gorgeous sights and fun-filled times!

First stop Portland, Oregon

Vacation officially began on June 21,2011. Our first stop was in Portland, Oregon, where we got to visit with Kim, Larry, and Jeremy for a few days. The weather and scenery was absolutely beautiful - Cool, crisp morning and evenings with no humidity. Abi and Emily loved playing with the dog, Abby. By the end of the visit, I think she was worn out.Jeremy teaches golf lessons to children and teens at the local golf course. Kim was showing us her garden with the many slugs. Our girls are on a mission - to kill as many slugs as possible. Jeremy with Minnie - a cat with multiple personalities. I am fascinated watching Kim cook pizza on the grill. She is such a great cook - the pizza was out of this world!It is great being able to relax and visit with those that we love. What a great way to start our vacation.

On June 13-14, 2011, the KHES safety patrol took their year-end trip to Orlando. We spent one day at Downtown Disney, with dinner at the Rainforest Cafe, and the second day at Blizzard Beach. After the long hot bus ride from Keystone, Abi, Rachel, and Anna were ready to jump in the pool at the hotel, before heading to Downtown Disney.Emily and Haley in the hot tub. On June 11, 2011, we had an end of the year get together for all of the families who have been together through elementary school. These kids have been in classes, sports, and grown up together. It is a great group of families. We have had a blast getting to know each other over the years. It is hard to believe that Abi's days at Keystone Heights Elementary School are officially over. She has had wonderful teachers and experiences. We are so thankful to everyone who has been so influential in her life. Abi and Nolan were both members of the News Team. They were recognized by their teacher, Mrs. Wasik, for all their hard work and dedication. They were also recognized separately for their videos that were submitted at the county level. Abi got Honorable Mention and Nolan received 1st place. Pretty girl....inside and out!Handsome young man.....Next, Abi was recognized for being a member of the Safety Patrol. Abi was also recognized as having straight A's from 3rd grade through 6th grade. What an accomplishment!Two students were chosen as Best All Around. This award is decided by teachers, staff, and administration. The boy chosen was Micah Rabb and the girl, Abi Loose. Emily's Soccer Party

Emily's end of the season soccer party was held at the Julius' home. The kids played in the pool, on the four wheeler, and played a game of kickball. Emily's team was "Red Bull." They were a very young team, but ended up finishing in 2nd place in the final tournament. Mr. Ryan gave rides to whoever would take the challenge.....Most of the team was able to come to the pary. They are waiting for the trophy presentation..... One of the coach's was full of energy. On the count of 3....One....Two....Three....Red Bull!Emily had a good soccer season learning the rules and regulations of the game. It was much more competitive than any other sport that she has played. Her coaches were very patient and helpful with all the players and we are very grateful for them and all the volunteer hours they put in.

Abi's News Team Field Trip

During Abi's 6th grade year, she was part of the KHES News Team. There are about 12 students chosen for each semester to produce the morning announcements. Abi was anchor one of her last days. The News Team took a field trip on May 27, 2011 to the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida. The students were able to tour where radio stations and TV stations are produced locally. Some of the girls on the News Team are Maura, Rachel, Madison, Riley, Anna, and Abi.Madison, Abi, Anna, Mrs. Wilkes, and Mrs. Beck heading into the Communications building.....These are the stations that are produced right here at the University of Florida.... Waiting on our tour guide.....This is the voice of the sports announcer on the morning talk radio, WRUF 850....This is a group photo of all the News Team students.....This young man was our tour guide in the actual studio part of the station. He was full of energy and loved the students asking lots of questions. Abi's 12th Birthday Celebration

Abi's birthday party began with a sleepover after the 6th grade dance. On Saturday morning, we left out at 9:00am heading to Daytona Lagoon at Daytona Beach. Haley, Emily, Jordan, Anna, Abi, Lianna, Riley, Maura, and MaKenna all shared this special day. Emily and Haley enjoying the lazy river..... Off to the water slides....Abi, Lianna, and MauraJordan and MaKenna off too......Maura riding as a single rider....Abi's mouth is wide open as her and Lianna come around the last bend....Jordan and MaKenna braved the enclosed slide.....all smiles!Here come Anna and Riley.....Emily and Haley.....Silly girls....A little R & R.....Lianna, MaKenna, and Jordan waiting patiently for the bucket to drop hundreds of gallons of water on them (as Abi looks on).....After a few hours at the waterpark, we were all ready to eat, play games, and enjoy cake.....Birthday girl is all smiles....As we waited for the pizza, the girls each got some tokens to spend in the arcade.....The girls played a game of charades....Abi was a breakdancer.....Jordan, a monkey.....Lianna, a baseball player.....Maura, a ballerina.....Emily, a basketball player......The next game they played was a race to see who could pop a balloon first, by sitting on it. There were extra game tokens inside the balloon for the girl who won each round.MaKenna and Maura.....Lianna went by herself.....Jordan taking on Anna......Happy Birthday to you!!Rachel and Anna getting ready for another round of rides.... Abi's Sixth Grade Dance

It's hard to believe that Abi is almost finished with Keystone Heights Elementary School. The 6th grade dance has been a tradition ever since I was a student there. However, like everything else it has become bigger and better. The day before the dance, I took Abi, Anna, Jordan, and Riley to get their fingernails painted. Abi chose a french manicure. The day of, Abi had a hair appointment for her first official up-do. Dressed and ready - she cleans up really nice!She ended up wearing the jacket all evening.... Jordan all dolled up......Love those hair dos!Jordan with her mom, Jennifer....Anna, Abi, and Jordan have been inseparable this year. They have many of their classes together and are with each other 3 days a week for gymnastics. Anna with her mom, Dawn....Riley has been a friend of Abi's since kindergarten..... Great friends......The theme for the dance is always kept secret until the students walk into the cafeteria. This year the theme was "Deep Blue Destiny." Many parents worked countless hours organizing and planning to make this event a success. This is a waterfall with coral that was put in one corner of the room. The sunken ship was a great focal point when the students walked into the room.The DJ was on the stage, which was decorated with more underwater plants, netting, anchor, and a treasure chest.In the back of the cafeteria, we set up the food and drink tables. The punch fountain was a huge hit. Before we let the students in, I got a picture of all the 6th grade teachers. They have been wonderful this year.The doors opened at 7:30. Here is the gathering of people outside about 10 minutes before the beginning of the dance. The girls loved this song as well..... "You make me want to shout....throw your hands up....Shout!" The event was a lot of work, but well worth it to see the smiles on all of the kids faces. They had such a great time. It will be a memory that lasts forever.

State Gymnastics in Tampa 2011

The nerves began the week before....all building to the state meet in Tampa. Abi's goal was to get at least all 8.0's in every event. She is the most nervous about beam and bars. Jade, Abi, and Jordan will be competing together today.One of their coaches, Malinda, greets them as they arrive.First event.....beam. She nailed everything - score....9.05. Next up....floor with a score of 8.0. Abi and Jordan waiting for vault.Vault score....8.80She's feeling pretty good about everything at this point.One more event, bars! Her highest score has been a 7.7. Today she got an 8.0.She finished 5th on vault.....3rd on beam.....And 5th overall......Seth waiting and watching the awards ceremony....BFF's, Abi and Jordan doing their Hollywood pose.....A little sassy....It is rare for all of my family to be in one place.... Thanks to everyone who came out and cheered Abi on!

Tim and I celebrated 17 years of marriage. We had a great time! We went to dinner, then to a play at the Hippodrome. We wanted to go to "The Melting Pot" in Gainesville, but realized that it closed it's doors for good. We decided to do our own fondue at home - which turned out better than we expected. What a great day together! I love you, Tim! I hope we have at least 17 more years together.

Soccer Days Begin

Emily's soccer season began in early April. The field that she plays on is huge. It is almost the size of a regulation field. She is still learning how to play the game and her defensive position.One of her great friends, Haley, is on her team. She is a natural born athlete, with none stop energy.So far this season, her team has won some, lost some, and tied a couple of games as well. The important thing is they all seem to be having fun and learning the game. Go #13.

Anna's Party at Latitude 30

Friday, April 8, 2011, the kids were out of school. We were off to Jacksonville to celebrate Anna's 12th birthday. Latitude 30 was the nicest bowling alley and arcade that I have ever been to. Abi, Delaney, and the birthday girl, Anna relaxing on the leather couches.... waiting for their turn to bowl.Emily and Haley were invited as well....Abi playing Guitar Hero as Anna looks on.....Emily and Haley on the Typhoon.....it is like an open simulator.Anna dancing with the beat. Jordan and Abi take their turn on the typhoon...Rachel and Riley.....After Latitude 30, we went to the Avenues mall where the girls spent 2 hours trying on dresses. Look how cute Jordan and Anna look in their matching outfits.Abi, Jordan, and Emily go for the same style...Watch out world.We had a great time celebrating with Anna. She is such a great friend. Happy birthday girl!

A Day at the Fair

Sunday, April 3rd, a group of us went to the county fair in Green Cove Springs. The kids always have a great time. Jordan and Riley braved the rides with Abi.Brylee, Haley, and Emily were partners and daredevils as well..... They all went on this ride...you just can't see them in the back. This ride swings left and right, going in full circles as well. My stomach would not survive.They must have liked it....

Spring Break Fun

Spring Break started with what else? A trip to Crescent Beach with friends. Riley, Anna, and Abi had a great day together.Haley and Emily stopping to pose for a picture... Lunch break.....

The kids did a little bit of everything.... swimming in the ocean, building sand castles, and playing a game of baseball. Riley, Anna, and Abi with their completed sand fort....

The next day, we went to Fernandina Beach to visit with cousins. The kids began gathering dead jelly fish that had washed up on the shore. They counted over 200.

Abi found this starfish in a tide pool.....

They brave the cold temperatures of the Atlantic.....

Seth and Kailee are not sure about the water....There are jellyfish here as well. Abi found a "baby" one....The pier and jetties at Fort Clinch State Park.At the end of our Spring Break, we went to Holloywood Studios with Andy, Mindy, Brian, and Jackson. Megan was with her friends from school and met us there later in the day.The streets are packed early on....Tim, Emily, Abi, Jackson, and Brian taking a break....Walking down the "Streets of America"......The girls were so excited to see Megan...They have missed her very much!We had a great break with family and friends. Lots of fun memories and great times!

Spring Gymnastics

Abi's 2nd gymanstics meet was an optional meet in Daytona Beach. At this meet, every girl from their gym competed together during the same time frame. They had a great time cheering for each other.

Me, Emily, Meme and Pa watching and enjoying the show.Our girls did very well in the awards -taking the first 4 spots in each apparatus. Our level 5 girls earned a high enough team score to place 2nd and receive a banner for our gym. Even though it is February... you can't go to Daytona without going to the beach. The tumbling begins..... Mr. Wilkes found a little crab.....the girls are always fascinated by sea life.Emily can't resist the water - even though it is freezing!The next meet Abi attended was in Port Richey. She had a fabulous meet.2nd on the bars.....She was shocked! This is her first time ever placing on bars. Way to go, Abi!2nd on floor...3rd overall!One more meet to go this season...States! Good luck to all our Shooting Stars!

Fireplace and Patio Addition

Tim has been working tirelessly on our new addition.

Plans and preparation began in October 2010.

He dug the footer and prepared the foundation for the concrete.An empty slate, literally......The brick masonry workers were wonderful....

It turned out better than we expected!Tim starting the roof..... ....and concrete mantelOur first fire....and of course, smores!Tim put the trusses up, ready for Ted and Cim

to help with the roof....Ted and Cim came down for a weekend

and helped Tim put the roof on...

We thank them so much for all their

hard work and blistered hands!Slowly, Tim has got the shingles on....

Back-breaking work!The grill area with the concrete countertop

that Tim designed and poured has

already been used many times.Every weekend Tim is working to try to complete the job.

He has spent countless hours with lots of sore muscles and joints.

It will be so worth it when it is finally completed!

Emily's YBA season

Emily played YBA basketball this winter.

She learned a lot about the game and had a great time

playing with her friend, Haley. Her coaches were Jordan

and McKenzie, which play on the high school basketball team.

Their team had a great season, finishing

1st place in the final tournament.

some hoops between games and quarters.

Girl's Day Out - Emily's 9th birthday

Emily's birthday party began on Sunday, January 16, 2011

with her two best friends sleeping over and being silly.

The next morning we were off for a day of fun and pampering.

Tallahassee Bound.....Abi's 1st Level 5 Gymnastics Competition

Abi's first gymnastics competition was

Sunday, January 16, 2010 at Tully Gym

in Tallahassee, Florida.

We drove up on Saturday since she had

to be at the gym by 7:30am.
