Haleakala Mountain in Maui

On July 2, 2011 we decided to make the trip to Haleakala National Park. Normally this is a hot spot for sunrise viewing, but we opted for sunset. We started our journey in shorts and t-shirts and ended in jeans and sweatshirts. Who would have thought Hawaii has a place that is about 50 degrees in the summer. We stopped at a crater on the way up the mountain....The wind is blowing and it is cold! We are already above the clouds...Reaching the top of the mountain at 10,000 feet.....The observatory on Haleakala....The barren land at this elevation.....This is a plant called a "silversword." They grow all over in this type of dry climate. They are soft to touch, but look like a sea urchin.Sunset from above the clouds....Our rental - Jeep Compass....I can't imagine getting up at 2 am to drive to this mountain for sunrise. It must be spectacular to see, but we thought it was a beautiful view at sunset.
