On July 2, 2011 we decided to make the trip to Haleakala National Park. Normally this is a hot spot for sunrise viewing, but we opted for sunset. We started our journey in shorts and t-shirts and ended in jeans and sweatshirts. Who would have thought Hawaii has a place that is about 50 degrees in the summer.
We stopped at a crater on the way up the mountain....
The wind is blowing and it is cold!

This is a plant called a "silversword." They grow all over in this type of dry climate. They are soft to touch, but look like a sea urchin.

I can't imagine getting up at 2 am to drive to this mountain for sunrise. It must be spectacular to see, but we thought it was a beautiful view at sunset.
